Diamond Backing Plates

Among the many advantages of  diamond backing plates (DBP):

• Substantial reduction in background for all types of radiation (IR --> visible --> UV --> x-rays).
• Substantial reduction in the interfering "red" light fluorescing from diamonds at P > 100 GPa.
• Substantial savings in price due to small anvil weight (W ~ 0.02 C).
• Substantial increase in structural strength. Axial forces are departed sideways allowing for larger apertures in backing plates.

Holes are laser-drilled in the form of a truncated cone. The base diameters are to fit the dimensions/apertures of the metal backing plates and desired solid angle. 
The DBP and anvils are in direct contact. Accuracy in holes center alignments better than 2 µm

.Typical DBP are made of brilliant-cut gem-quality 0.2 -0.3  C diamonds and the small anvils weight is < 0.05 C.

Several tests made with 0.02 – 0.03 C anvils with 0.2-mm culets sustained pressures exceeding 100 GPa.

Partially PERFORATED anvils 
Among the many advantages of partially perforated anvils 

• Substantial reduction in background for all types of radiation (IR --> visible --> UV --> x-rays).
• Substantial increase in structural strength. Axial forces are departed sideways allowing for larger apertures in backing plates.
